Note:
- Before doing this experiment, experimenters should wear lab coats and goggles at all times.
- The experiment will start with 1:0 Pure ethanol first.
- Close off the air valve by turning it clockwise. Make sure to stop when there is resistance from the knob. Make sure the thermometer in the water bath reads 56°C
- Open the air valve slowly by slowly turning the valve counter clockwise. The left side of the manometer should go up while the right side of the manometer should go down. Close the valve by turning clockwise when the left side of the manometer goes up to 180mmHg.
- Open the air valve very slowly until the level of the liquid in both side of the isoteniscope is balanced, then close the air valve.
- Repeat step three two times for practice.
- Important! Make sure the air bubbles are going into the condenser. If it is not, call the lab supervisors for assistance.
- Make a table in the lab book shown below:
- Repeat step three once more, take the reading off the manometer this time and mark it as trial 1.
- Turn the black knob in the upper left hand corner of the heater 3 turns clockwise (see figure 3). Note that each 3 turns clockwise equals a 2°C increase in the water bath.
- Make sure the red light is turned on in the heater.
- Wait for the red-light to turn off
- When the red-light is off, open the air valve very slowly until the level of the liquid in both side of the isoteniscope is balanced, then close the air valve
- Take the readings of the two legs of the manometer and the readings from the thermometer.
- The readings should be recorded under the corresponding columns. (Add the readings of left leg and right leg of the manometer together to get DP
- Repeat steps eight to thirteen until the temperature in the water bath reaches 90°C.
- Clean out the isoteniscope. Repeated rinsing with acetone and subsequent drying with compressed air is recommended.
- Repeat steps 1 to 15 with the following Ethanol to n-Propanol mixture: 8:1, 4:1, 1:1, 1:4, 1:8, and 0:1.
