Investigation Into electromagnets (Iron Core) |
Purpose: |
To design an experiment to determine the strength of an electromagnet in terms of presence of an iron core. |

Problem: |
What is the effect on the strength of the magnet when it is under influence by the presence of the iron core? |

I hypothesize that:
(Disproved) Without the presence of the iron core, the strength of the electromagnet will be greater. |
Assumptions |
The Power supply produces the exact voltage as it is labeled. |

Materials: |
1 meter of 18-gauge insulated wire
Power supply
Long iron core
Paper clips
Wire strippers
Voltmeter
Lined paper |

Procedure: |
|
1. |
Wrap the wire tightly around the iron core. Leaving about 15 cm of free wire on each end (10 turns first time, 20 turns second time)

2. |
Strip about 3 cm of the insulation off both ends of the wire, using wire strippers. |
3. |
Secure the ends of the wire to the poles of the power supply. |
4. |
Lay the paper clip and the magnet on a line paper |
5. |
Hold the electromagnet and slowly drag the paperclip towards the magnet until the magnet attracts it. |
6. |
Record the distance by defining the number of lines between the paperclip, spaces between lines are 1cm |
7. |
Repeat steps 1-6 and changing the variables, such as changing the voltage, number of turns of the wire and removing the core.
Remember: Do one variable only for each repeat.
The default is 6.5 volts, 20 turns and with iron core |

Sources of Error |
The error in this lab can be the purity of iron in the iron core. If the quality of iron core were not pure, it would lower the magnetic strength of our magnet, causing the result to be lower than the theoretical value. |
