Introduction

This experiment is for the purpose of determining the vapor pressure of Ethanol and n-propanol and their mixtures. Determining the vapor pressure is important because vapor pressures are needed to understand distillation and other separation techniques. Vapor pressure is the unique pressure at a specific temperature where a vapor and a gas phase of a pure substance reaches equilibrium. The following formula is derived from the relationship of vapor pressure and the temperature:

Where a is vapor pressure and T is Temperature. Vapor pressures are most accurately measured with an isoteniscope, which will be discussed in detail in the apparatus section. It is in theory that there is only one degree of freedom when a pure substance exists in two phases at the same time. Thus, when temperature remains in a constant, vapor and liquid can co-exist when it is in a unique pressure known as the vapor pressure. From this experiment, it is possible to determine the molecular weight of the liquid mixture from the weight of the vapor in the gas density bulb, the vapor pressure, and the volume and temperature of the gas bulb.
From the measurements obtained, one can calculate the latent heat of vaporization and the corresponding normal boiling point of the pure substance.
If different compositions of mixture of two pure substances are measured for density and molar mass, one can find the mole fractions of its components and a pressure composition diagram can be made based on the data.
