This experiment uses a specialized piece of glassware known as the isoteniscope. The apparatus consists of the U-tube and a bulb on its entrance arm. The other end of the U-tube is attached to a water-cooled condenser with a mercury manometer. The sample is contained in the bulb, and it is only in contact with its own vapor. There are two valves present in this apparatus. Opening the air valve can reduce the pressure of the isoteniscope by a connection to the laboratories’ vacuum system. Opening the vacuum valve raises the pressure. The mercury manometer is for measuring the difference between the room pressure and the pressure of the apparatus. The isoteniscope is settled in a constant temperature bath, and it is measured with a thermometer within plus or minus 1 degree Celsius. The temperature of the bath is controlled with a thermostat heater-circulator.

In figure 2, we can see that in the water bath we have the isoteniscope, heater, stirrer, and the thermometer. The main purpose of these materials is to control the temperature of the water bath.

In figure 3, the picture of the heater is shown. The heater’s purpose is to control the temperature of the water bath. The black knob in the upper left hand corner is for controlling the temperature where 3 turns clockwise is 2°C.

Figure 4: Isoteniscope
Figure 4 is a picture of the isoteniscope. The isoteniscope is a specialized piece of hardware and its purpose is to have the level of the desired liquid balanced in both legs of its U-shape tube in order to get manometer readings.

Figure 5: Manometer
The manometer’s purpose is to measure the pressure of the system when the liquid within the two legs of the isoteniscope is balanced. Every line in the manometer is 1mmHg. The two sides of the manometer are called the legs of the manometer.

Figure 6: Valves
Figure 6 shows two valves, the vacuum valve and the air valve. Opening the air valve is clockwise and closing it is counterclockwise, this is the same for the vacuum valve. The Air valve is to let air in and the vacuum valve is to let air out.

Figure 7: Air tank
Figure six shows an air tank attached to the apparatus. The air tank, when in combination with the vacuum valve and air valve, controls the amount of air flowing in or out of the system.
